The 7 Days Rongai Route offers 7 full days of trekking on Kilimanjaro's only northern approach — a wilder, drier, and quieter alternative to the crowded southern routes. Starting from Rongai Gate (1,950 m), accessed via the Marangu Gate from Moshi, this route approaches the mountain from the Kenyan border side. As the only route beginning on the northern slope, it enjoys significantly less rainfall than its southern counterparts, making it an excellent choice for trekking during the shoulder seasons and for travellers who prefer solitude on the trail.

After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate (1,870 m) for park registration. From here, continue by vehicle along a rough road to Rongai Gate (1,950 m), the official start of the Rongai Route on the northern side of the mountain. The trek begins gently through cultivated farmland and open pine forest, following a wide track that gradually narrows as you ascend. The trail winds through a dry forest environment distinct from the rainforest on the southern routes, with views opening up behind you towards the Kenyan border. Reach Simba Camp (2,625 m), your first night's camp, nestled in a clearing surrounded by tall trees.
Leave the forest behind as the trail opens into beautiful bushland and low alpine scrub. The path climbs gently across the open northern slopes with expansive views stretching across the savannah towards Kenya. The vegetation transitions to giant heather and moorland plants as you gain altitude. Kikelewa Cave (3,630 m) is a sheltered camp positioned among giant boulders and rocky outcrops, offering a sense of remoteness you won't find on other routes. The afternoon light on the plains below is spectacular.
A steeper day as you climb into the high alpine desert zone towards the dramatic jagged ridges of Mawenzi Peak. The trail ascends more sharply today, crossing rocky terrain with sparse vegetation. The reward is extraordinary — Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m) sits beside a small glacial lake at the base of Mawenzi Peak's immense east face. The setting is one of the most spectacular on any Kilimanjaro route, with the shattered summit ridge of Mawzeni reflecting in the dark waters of the tarn. Arrive early enough to explore the area and photograph the incredible rock formations.
A dedicated 'climb high, sleep low' acclimatisation day — the secret to the Rongai Route's strong summit success rate. After breakfast, hike up the Mawenzi Ridge to approximately 4,600 m, traversing the lunar landscape around the base of Mawenzi Peak's towering buttresses. The terrain is otherworldly — volcanic rock, scree, and the occasional ice patch, with staggering views across the Saddle to Kibo Peak and down the northern slopes towards Kenya. Descend back to the tarn for a relaxed afternoon resting, playing cards, and preparing for the days ahead.
Today you leave the dramatic Mawenzi landscape behind and traverse the upper alpine desert towards Kibo's massive volcanic cone. The trail crosses the vast Saddle — the high-altitude desert plateau between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. This is the highest and most exposed section of the trek so far, with temperatures dropping well below freezing even during the day. Kibo Hut (4,703 m) is a basic stone dormitory perched on the lower slopes of Kibo's summit cone. After an early dinner, your guide will brief you on the midnight summit attempt, and you'll rest until your 11 PM wake-up call.
Wake at 11 PM for hot tea and snacks, then step into the dark by midnight. Ascend the steep switchbacks of the normal route up the scree slope to Gilman's Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim — arriving in time for a spectacular sunrise over the eastern ice fields. From Gilman's Point, follow the crater rim trail for another hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the Roof of Africa. Celebrate with photos and a moment of silence on top of Africa before starting the long descent via the normal route to Horombo Hut (3,720 m), where a warm meal and well-earned rest await in comfortable dormitory accommodation.
A triumphant descent through the moorland and rainforest you would have seen on the ascent if doing the Marangu route. The trail passes through Horombo's giant heather fields, past Mandara Hut, and down the lush forest path to Marangu Gate. At the gate, you complete park formalities and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate — a proud moment commemorating your achievement. Your vehicle meets you for the drive back to Moshi, where a hot shower, cold drink, and a comfortable hotel bed await.
