Trip Itinerary

1 Stop

7:30 AM — Hotel Pickup & Drive to Materuni

Your guide will collect you from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha between 7:30 and 8:00 AM. The drive to the Kilimanjaro foothills takes approximately 45 minutes from Moshi and 1.5 hours from Arusha, passing through the lush farmland of the Chagga heartland.

2 Stop

8:30 AM — Materuni Waterfalls Hike

Arrive at the trailhead and begin your guided hike to Materuni Waterfalls. The trail winds through dense tropical rainforest, banana groves, and coffee plantations, with the sound of the waterfall growing louder as you approach. The hike takes approximately 45 minutes each way on well-maintained paths. At the falls, take in the full 80-metre drop of crystal-clear water cascading into a natural swimming pool.

10:30 AM — Traditional Coffee Experience

From the waterfall, drive a short distance to a family-owned coffee farm on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. Here you'll experience every stage of coffee production, from picking ripe red cherries off the bush to hulling, roasting over an open fire, grinding with a traditional mortar and pestle, and finally brewing and tasting a fresh cup of Kilimanjaro Arabica.

12:00 PM — Chagga Village Lunch

Drive to a nearby Chagga village where a local family will host you for a traditional home-cooked lunch. The meal is prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients and typically includes dishes like ndizi nyama (plantain with meat), ugali, stewed vegetables, and fresh tropical fruit.

1:00 PM — Traditional Blacksmith Visit

After lunch, visit a working blacksmith whose family has been forging tools and household items for generations using techniques that predate colonial contact. Watch as the blacksmith heats iron in a charcoal forge, hammers it into shape on an anvil, and quenches it in water — producing knives, hoes, and other implements still used in Chagga farming today.

6 Stop

2:00 PM — Return Transfer to Hotel

Depart the blacksmith village and begin the scenic drive back to your hotel. The return journey takes approximately 45 minutes from Moshi and 1.5 hours from Arusha, passing back through the Kilimanjaro foothills and Chagga farmland. You'll arrive back at your hotel by approximately 3:30–4:00 PM.

Practical details every traveller should read before confirming. We'll cover everything again in your pre-departure pack.

Duration & Timing

The tour runs for approximately 8 hours from pickup to drop-off. Pickup is between 7:30–8:00 AM and return is by 3:30–4:00 PM. Exact times may vary slightly depending on your hotel location.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is recommended but not required for this day trip. The hike to Materuni Waterfalls is moderate and suitable for most fitness levels. Inform us of any medical conditions at booking.

Swimming

Swimming at the base of Materuni Waterfalls is optional. The water is cold but refreshing. Bring a towel or rent one at the trailhead for a small fee. Wear water shoes or sandals with grip for wet rocks.

Payment & Booking

A 30% deposit confirms your booking; the balance is due on the day of the tour. We accept cash (USD or TZS), mobile money (M-Pesa), and card payments. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. A guideline of USD 10–15 per person for your guide is customary. Tips can be given in cash at the end of the tour.

Group Size

This tour runs in groups of 2–12. Private departures with a dedicated guide and vehicle are available on request — ask us for a custom quote.

Dietary Requirements

Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary needs can be accommodated. Please inform us at the time of booking so we can notify the village family preparing your lunch.

Best Time to Go

Year-round activity. The dry season (June–October) offers the most comfortable hiking conditions. The green season (November–May) brings lush vegetation and fewer visitors. The waterfall is spectacular year-round.
